Language is the road map of a
culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.
– Rita Mae Brown
International Mother Language
Day has a lot of relevance in Bangladesh. It corresponds
to the day when a bunch of students from University of Dhaka, Jagannath
University and Dhaka Medical College were killed by police while they were
carrying out a demonstration to give ‘Bangla’ the status of a national
language. The incident occurred near the Dhaka High Court and it is since the
year 2000 observed as International Language Day.
Language is not just something
that people speak with each other. Apart from being a medium of communication,
language has manifold significances. It connects people. It informs us of our
roots and also the rich heritage that we have inherited from our ancestors.
Language is a powerful tool that has been used since ages for mass protests
during tough times. The binding force of language is the main reason that a
person can forget anything in life but never his or her mother tongue.
Mr. Rafiqul Aslam personally
wrote a letter to Mr.Kofi Annan on 9 January, 1988 for preserving the different
mother tongues of the world which were suffering an unsung death. He proposed
the date 21st February as that was the day when the student
protesters were killed. Finally keeping in consideration the principles and
importance of Multi-linguism, the General Conference of UNESCO passed a
resolution to protect the mother tongues of around the world!

instruments by which we preserve our heritage. The biggest beach resort of Bangladesh, Royal
